Why Earn a Degree Abroad
So you want to be a computer engineer? As computer systems become ever more mobile and innovations in transportation zip aspiring students around the world faster than ever, getting degrees from top universities for computer engineering abroad has never been easier. Except that whole studying part; that’s still going to demand serious brainpower.
Pursuing a degree in computer engineering overseas offers a global perspective on how the field is changing the world, and how the technology and computer systems you develop will impact diverse communities. Regardless of what you hope to build as a computer engineer, experience in a new context will broaden your horizons, spur creativity, and ground your work in the most pressing challenges facing the world today. International students also benefit from learning in a multicultural environment and making friends from around the world. This makes spontaneous study sessions much more fun!
Computer engineering degree holders can expect a generous salary package and plenty of job opportunities following graduation, especially those who go the software (as opposed to hardware) route. Graduates in this field are in high demand, as companies in nearly every industry - from robotics to hair styling - seek to make their mark on the Digital Age. International degree holders will have an even wider network and exposure to diverse computer systems; putting their computer engineering careers on the fast track to a $ucce$$.
Locations
With the rapid global expansion of computer technology, university-level computer engineering programs have popped up in even the most isolated corners of the globe, so students have plenty of location options to choose from. When it comes to studying computer engineering abroad, the world is your oyster!
As an international hub of activity and innovation, it’s only fitting that London is host to numerous computer engineering programs at some of the top-ranked universities worldwide. Universities in London bring together students from all over the world, and the concentration of academic institutions make it a meeting point for interesting research groups and conferences in every field imaginable. After class, jam out with the spirits of the Beatles on Abbey Road or grab a cheeky pint in Camden Town. You’ll never run out of things to do in this lively city; just be sure to mind the gap as you hop on the Tube.
Asian countries like Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, and China are also emerging destinations for computer engineering study. A lot of cutting-edge computer engineering research is happening in this region, led by top-tier universities like the National University of Singapore and Tsinghua University, as well as more focused technical universities. Outside of school, relax on Southern Thailand’s infamous beaches, rub shoulders with Ruby on Rails developer “Matz” in Japan, or learn 丙正正, the Chinese version of C++ (for bragging rights).
Looking for something more off-the-beaten path? Peru also hosts a number of programs. International universities for computer engineering are concentrated in urban Lima, but Peruvian program schedules provide plenty of opportunities to get out of the city and explore the country’s many natural wonders. Program academics may be a bit less rigorous (in terms of credit hours and post-graduate networking) than other destinations, but Peru has a lot more than classrooms to offer visiting students. When you’re not frantically coding, take some time to trek the Inca Trail through the Andes Mountains to the ancient ruins of Machu Picchu or enjoy the island wildlife on Islas Ballestas.
Computer Engineering Degrees
Digital savvy is the new black, as the abundance of hip computer engineering colleges attest to. Whether you’re a computer science wizz looking to brush up on your engineering, an engineer eager to get into computing, or a new guy on the scene ready to take the plunge into the field, there’s a program out there that’s just right for everyone.
If you really want to study with the top computer engineers in the world at some of the best universities for computer engineering, head to bustling Beijing, termed China’s Silicon Valley for it’s lively and innovative tech startup scene. Topping the university ranking charts in computer engineering worldwide is Tsinghua University in Beijing, followed by Zhejiang University in Hangzhou, China and the National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore. These programs are well-connected, and often include internships or guest speaking events with prestigious international partners.
Of course, also expect to spend plenty of time in the classroom mastering the tools of the trade. As its title implies, computer engineering is a hybrid program born from computer science and electronic engineering, and most programs require students to take courses from both of these disciplines, in addition to courses in hardware and software development.
Some undergrad programs are more theoretical, but the best undergraduate computer engineering schools are more hands-on, and a few require internships or other capstone projects, challenging students to put their skills to the test in the “real world.” At the graduate and doctoral levels, students are expected to hone their focus on a specific area of research, such as cyber systems, nano-devices, or big data. With hard work and dedication, it will take students roughly four years to complete a bachelor's program, two years to complete a Master’s, and an additional three to five years to earn that “Dr.” honorary. Basic experience with programming, coding languages, and computer hardware is helpful but not required for aspiring undergraduates in computer engineering.
Benefits & Challenges
Computer engineering is a dynamic field, and pioneers around the world are continually pushing the boundaries of what technology can do. Going abroad to study computer engineering immerses students in this global discussion, and builds intercultural competencies and, of course, mad computer skillz. Students with international computer engineering degrees will have a leg up on the global job market, and be better prepared to create hard/software that addresses global challenges.
For those who prefer life behind a computer screen because social interaction isn’t their strong suit, getting a degree abroad undeniably adds a host of new social settings to master. Going overseas means immersing yourself in new ways of life, and, in some cases, courses and university administration may even be conducted in another language. For students made nervous by the prospect of adjustment to foreign languages and customs, adaptation can be a challenge.
On the other hand, computing is a universal language, and you can count on your colleagues to be just as enthusiastic about code as you are! There’s plenty to learn from getting out of your comfort zone, so don’t let a little cultural encryption deter you from pursuing your computer science degree abroad.
If (obj !== degree in computer engineering) obj.x( go abroad! );
while (x = university);
In other words: don’t let the digital world hold you back from the physical world. Getting computer engineering degrees abroad is the best of both, and a whole new world of opportunities awaits when you take the plunge!

Studying my bachelor's in Beijing was the best decision
June 16, 2026by: Nina Koskinen - FinlandProgram: Bachelor's & Master's Degrees in China | Apply with GAC
I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.

A journey to comfort and warmth
February 07, 2023by: Emmanuel Junior Nweke - NigeriaLike the rising of the sun, slowly brings warmth to a cold day, that's how I can describe my experience at AUB. The people of Lebanon sometimes say they can be rude, but what I found out is the issue of trust, the people are rich in hospitality and once they trust you, they make you feel at home, and give you comfort and warmth. At the end, everyone would miss their time at AUB.
MBA from AUB
March 24, 2018by: Matt - United Arab EmiratesChoosing a business school was a major decision, and my number one goal was to position myself for an international career. I chose to focus on the Middle East & North Africa region because of its rapidly-growing population and demand for skilled talent. The MBA program at AUB's Olayan School of Business was exactly what I hoped for. As a non-business undergrad, I benefited greatly from the classes and workshops. I also had the opportunity to represent AUB at 3 business case competitions in Canada, Hong Kong, and Germany. Most importantly, I can credibly work with companies and business leaders from across MENA. Today, I'm based in Dubai and working at one of the world's top consulting firms. Anyone considering studying in this part of the world should have AUB and OSB at the top of their list.
Best decision ever
May 31, 2016by: Brittany - EnglandProgram: Degree Programs at the University of Westminster, London
I enjoyed my time at Westminster University. I studied in the post-graduate course Media, Campaigning and Social Change. This course exceeded my expectations. It covered everything listed on the information site plus so much more. University of Westminster is very diverse and I always met so many people from all over, studying various and interesting topics. The academic staff are very professional and know their topics well. The foundation of learning at UW is based in critical thinking. I loved how I was allowed to express my own opinions, hear others and learn from them and also and analyse an idea from all angles. I would recommend this university and this course.
