Education Degrees Abroad

In a field as vital to our future as education, it’s important for different countries to learn from each other about what does and does not work while training subsequent generations for success. Earning your education degree abroad is a valuable opportunity to become an academic ambassador; travelling to another country, learning about their education systems and methods firsthand, then returning with a much broader perspective of the field.

Why Earn Your Degree Abroad

Education can be a complex profession to enter into, with a forest of bureaucratic red-tape often delineating the paths that future teachers and administrators are supposed to take. Yet effective theories and practices which remain behind education are universal, wherein earning your education degree abroad is the chance to broaden your structural knowledge of the field as a whole. Countries around the world vary significantly in their educational practices; where in the world will you choose to learn from?

Locations

While the entire globe is wide open in deciding where to earn your education degree abroad, there are usually two main paths that aspiring educators tend to follow in narrowing down their decisions.

First, where in the world can you receive the best degree abroad in education? Students who want the highest quality education themselves typically strive to earn their degree abroad in countries such as Australia, Canada, England, and the United States, where many of the world’s very best institutions of higher learning are located (42 of the world’s 50 most highly ranked universities for an education degree are to be found in these four countries alone).

Second, where in the world actually maintains the most effective internal education systems? Surprisingly, there is some discrepancy in the ratings. While all of the aforementioned countries do generally place in the top 20 worldwide, countries such as Japan, Ireland, Poland, and the Netherlands, among several others, will often fall before them.

If you are more interested in earning your education degree abroad within a proven national system instead of attending the most prestigious university (there are obviously perks to both), then begin by researching in depth the quality of different education systems around the world, then continue on to explore potential degree programs for yourself.

Academics & Degrees

It can be tricky at the outset figuring what type of degree (or degrees) you will need to move on to a career in education. Each country differs in their qualification procedures for professional educators, though many have in common that you will need to obtain an advanced or specialized degree on top of your basic studies. Prerequisites will also vary depending on whether you wish to move on to teaching or to the administrative side of education.

Yet while there are a tangle of different degrees you can earn and certification requirements depending on where you ultimately want to end up teaching, fortunately there are also many similarities in the process which transcend national borders. Universities everywhere will generally offer education degrees abroad at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctoral levels, each requiring an increasing amount of specialization, fieldwork, and independent research.

Other components of your education degree abroad may include writing a thesis and meeting a set amount of hours actually teaching in front of a classroom. It is a popular option for many aspiring educators to pursue a general education degree at any of these levels, then move on to obtain the necessary practical education degree for what particular profession they want to land in.

Benefits & Challenges

Context. Earning your education degree abroad can help by giving you the proper global context for understanding your own education system. The pros and cons, you will see, are all relative.

Global Model. By selecting a different country where to earn your education degree abroad, you are choosing to emulate that country as a model to move forward with professionally. Observe, learn, digest, and apply.

Linguistic Opportunity. Lastly, leaving home to pursue your degree abroad in education is a valuable chance to become adept in a second language. In our rapidly globalizing world, being bilingual is a huge boon within the field of education.
