A Guide to Design Degrees Abroad
Why Earn Design Degrees Abroad
Regardless of the courses you wish to pursue, a degree abroad in design will open you up to a whole new world of cultures, history, and styles — all of which will shine a light on your world view and allow you to take on fresh new perspectives. Design has its roots implanted in the foundation of civilization and built into the landscape around us, which creates an intoxicating aura that gives each city its unique selling point. Be it the fashionable model figures strutting down the streets of Paris or New York that garners the latest trends in fabrics, the incredible architecture of Prague that dots the city views, or the technological hub of Berlin that bursts with the talents of graphic and web design, every location sports the remnants of its designers.
Immersing yourself at top colleges for design internationally will allow you to undertake the road journeyed by the great talents before you. Who knows, maybe you will become the next Coco Chanel, Frank Gehry, or Versace?! You might already have the talent, but going after a degree abroad in design offers you the chance to refine your skills and enter into your chosen field all glue guns a blazin’! You can’t knit, sew, or hem yourself a career path towards design degree jobs; you need to prove you have what it takes to be a well-regarded designer.
Locations
With the world at your feet, you will need to figure out exactly what it is you want to get out of your degree. Do you want to travel to an exciting city bursting with the hustle and bustle of vibrant inspiration, or venture to a more secluded, rural area which will help nurse those creative juices?
France is home to many diverse creative hubs with each offering travelers a shot at achieving the ultimate qualifications. Of course, when you think of pursuing a degree in fashion design, you immediately think of the fashion capital of the world — Paris. However, this city isn’t exclusive to aspiring fashionistas, as you will also find courses which focus purely on art and architecture. Many colleges offer their courses in English, which is highly beneficial to those who do not speak French as a second language.
When taking courses in design degrees, it's easy to want to find somewhere close to your roots. However, traveling further south, like Australia, will propel you into a state of independence. After all, leaving all that you know behind to pursue an education is the whole point of your manoeuvre, so why not be a little daring? Australia is quickly becoming a popular destination for students pursuing a career in design, and with a wide arrange of course choices from computing to fine art. The land of Australia will never leave you short of material to fuel your designer passions from the epic natural landscape to the vibrant cities, you won’t have to worry about a single restless moment as you enjoy your new student life.
Home to some of the most well-respected universities in the Asian continent (not to mention some of the best art universities in the world), China offers a wide range of courses for its students. This includes a transdisciplinary course where you can develop your own unique skills while creating your own specialist outlook towards design. Each program for design degrees has its doors open to international students from every walk of life, so you will be sure that you will be able to start building a network of multi-diverse professionals. With intensive programs available to assist you with your Chinese-speaking skills, you will be provided with all the assistance you need to complete a solid degree in design.
Design Degree Programs
Earning a degree abroad in design will strengthen your qualifications to pursue your dream career, one that is filled with many design degree jobs. While you might feel you already have the talent to back yourself up, earning that degree in another country will define those skills and shape your talent into a more concise and unique force. Meeting other people from around the world who share your passion will also assist you on your road to success, as it opens you up to fresh perspectives and new ideas. You can’t build a network sitting in your makeshift office at home — you need to get out there and find people who will continuously force you to do better.
Undergraduate and master's programs are readily available for design degrees. A bachelor’s degree abroad in design will offer a wide scope of material, seducing you with a multitude of viewpoints on any particular topic. Undergraduate programs will provide you with an overview of the type of design you are studying from the history to the culture that surrounds it. Many universities require at least a high school diploma in order to gain admission, and while it isn’t a requirement, some background knowledge of design would be highly beneficial in a successful application.
Moving forward, earning a master’s in design at top design schools in the world will provide a narrower focus on your chosen field. These courses tend to be far more intensive and demand a greater deal of independent research. Depending on where you go, you can choose to branch out to the more business-y corporate side of the industry, which will sharpen your market skills and intellect. You will learn how to work with others in the industry and coincide on projects.
Many universities welcome international students with open arms. Do a little research into your desired college and see what kind of programs they offer to visiting students in terms of assisting with finance and studying.
Benefits & Challenges
Connections. You know the saying “keep your friends close but your enemies closer?” That also rings true with making acquaintances with your future competition. Kidding! Immersing yourself into university life at top colleges for design will help you meet people with similar dreams and ambitions, who you can fangirl/fanboy out with over web layouts or patterns during your lunch breaks. It's important to build a strong network during this time, as these are the people who can help shape your success.
Language. Earning a degree abroad in design anywhere brings up the issue of a language barrier. Uprooting your entire life is already stressful enough without the anxiety that you won’t be able to communicate. However, immersing yourself in the culture and bearing an open mind to the society around you will lead you to picking up some linguistics that will help to stimulate your travels. Keep in mind that many universities are aware of these challenges and have set up language classes to assist you. Luckily for web designers, HTML and CSS are universal.
From late night cramming before a test to exploring the vibrant setting of your new home, pursuing international design degrees is the first step to your independence. Discover the design aesthetic which will become your trademark and build the confidence needed to pursue your goals as the world's next great designer!

I wasn't sure about leaving Finland for a full degree in China, but GAC made the application process smooth. They helped me choose the right university, prepared my documents, and guided me through the visa process. Now I'm studying International Business at a top university in Beijing. Tuition is affordable, the campus is modern, and my classmates are from all over the world. The support didn't stop after enrollment – GAC checked in to make sure I settled in well. If you're considering a degree in China, go through GAC. They make it easy.

Incredible opportunity to attend such a stellar institution
April 21, 2026by: LisaProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in New York
Having entered the art world with an undergraduate degree in economics and no background in art, MA Contemporary Art program provided me with an understanding of the fundamentals of art business. From understanding how social and political factors inform artists and art movements, to developing the skills necessary to engage with art in its variety of mediums, my studies have allowed me to speak intelligently about art, and most importantly, to learn how to respect what artists are trying to convey. This experience has taught me to look at art through a more informed lens.
Invaluable experience
April 20, 2026by: SashaProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in London
I completed the MA in Contemporary Art in London. My time at Sotheby’s gave me both an entry point into and an understanding of the global art world. During my Master’s studies, I not only gained an incredible amount of academic knowledge, but was also introduced to the London art world and began building my career. In my work, I look at artworks all the time, and having the ability to critically assess and understand them is very important. The skill of visual analysis, as well as developing an eye, was a major focus during my studies, and I am glad that the tutors paid so much attention to it. We were constantly looking at different works and were expected to discuss them. We were also encouraged to go to exhibitions. You learn this skill as a student and then continue to refine it during your professional life.
The Sotheby’s Institute of Art experience was enriching and impactful
April 16, 2026by: AdefolakunmiProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in New York
I applied to Sotheby’s Institute of Art to learn more about the commercial art market and the business of art. I received a Master in Arts in Art Business at Sotheby’s Institute, and my courses included Art Law, International Art Markets, and Art Advisory and Collection Building. I also developed a Curatorial Thesis focused on Black Speculative Art theory, Afrosurrealism, and Afrofuturism. The MA Art Business program gave me a greater understanding of the different forces at play in the art market and how they work together for an artist and their career. It also made me more knowledgeable about the different art-related career opportunities available. Hearing from industry guest speakers, from Amy Cappellazzo to Jerry Saltz, exposed me and my fellow students to the different impacts professionals can make in the industry. It was empowering to be surrounded by professionals with various career experiences through our faculty, like Judith Prowda and Claude Grunitzky. We had a unique experience learning about art not only from a cultural and historical perspective, but also from a legal, financial, and market perspective.
I couldn’t imagine doing my Master’s anywhere else!
April 08, 2026by: ElenaProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in London
I had been wanting to study art history at Sotheby’s Institute for a long time and had always been drawn to the Institute’s MA Contemporary Art. I eventually started with a short course, which gave me a solid base and the chance to delve into a subject I’d always been passionate about. I instantly loved the Institute’s teaching approach—placing students in front of artworks, encouraging dialogue, and connecting theory with real experience. After my initial course. I truly believe I could not have received a better education. I constantly recommend the program to others! The MA not only provided me with in-depth knowledge of contemporary art, but it also strengthened my critical thinking, offered a clear structure of how the art world functions, and introduced me to the wide range of professional paths within it.
This course defined my art career
April 05, 2026by: LauraProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in London
I did the MA Art Business at the London campus because of its course reputation, faculty, and the depth and breadth of the program. I was looking for a course that would give me a broad but thorough introduction to the commercial art world. The MA Art Business program at Sotheby’s Institute inspired me to explore contemporary art, dream big, and nurture my confidence in international cross-cultural networking, which gave me the encouragement to find my path in the art business world. I would recommend this program to those with an interest in working in the commercial art world and collaborating with art industry players or to those who have an interest in collecting art.
It was a springboard into the multifaceted world of luxury.
April 03, 2026by: KarlaProgram: Sotheby’s Institute of Art – Master’s Programs in London
My time at Sotheby’s Institute was deeply enriching, and a big part of that was thanks to the incredible professors. Their expertise, support, and ability to connect theory with real-world examples made the learning experience truly engaging and inspiring. I loved how the MA Luxury Business program covered a wide range of luxury sectors—from hospitality and jewelry to fashion and art—and explored the evolving definition of luxury across cultures and time periods. Being in London really enhanced the experience, as the city itself is a global hub for art, fashion, and luxury. I especially appreciated the immersive learning. We had the opportunity to visit incredible places like the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London, Rathfinny Wine Estate in Sussex, Van Cleef & Arpels School in Paris, and Mandarin Oriental in Milan. These experiences offered invaluable insight into how luxury is created, curated, and communicated in different contexts. In addition to the site visits, we were also joined by a range of guest speakers from across the luxury sectors, including areas like jewelry and hospitality, who shared valuable insights into their careers, challenges, and lessons learned—adding a real-world dimension that made the learning feel even more relevant and inspiring. I also really enjoyed taking electives from other programs—my course on art forgery, for example, was especially eye-opening and gave me a new lens through which to view authenticity in the luxury space.
