Studying Management Abroad

Management is tough work. You have to be able to exercise patient leadership at all times, maintain a positive level of energy and responsibility, and engage with people with all different personalities and backgrounds. If you study management abroad you will be, consciously or unconsciously, fostering all these abilities. Uprooting from home and immersing yourself in a foreign culture will be challenging, but it will bring out the best in your abilities as a manager and global citizen.

Why Study Management Abroad

Cross-cultural communication skills are becoming more important than ever in today’s workplace; not only if you are planning on pursuing a career in management abroad, but in most domestic professional environments as well. Making the leap to study management abroad will help you develop this valuable skillset in supplement to the tremendous academic knowledge that you will also gain from the experience. Wherever your management aspirations lie, studying abroad will undoubtedly set you off on the right foot.

Locations

Management is an important profession in most industrialized and industrializing nations. As such you will have the opportunity to study management abroad at universities or satellite schools in most locations around the world; the decision is entirely up to you.

To begin narrowing down the options, it may be helpful to know that many of the best management programs abroad in the world are located in the United States and across Europe in countries such as England, Spain, and France. Top universities in these regions can be highly competitive, but management study abroad programs can help you gain admittance to learn among the best.

Asia also boasts a bevy of top management programs, as its universities continue to grow and climb the international rankings. Countries such as China, India, and Japan are great places to study management abroad because of their highly touted schools and important global influence in business.

The language barrier is something that you will have to watch out for when deciding where to study management abroad. While English speaking programs are available in many areas, if you want to enroll at a full time university then generally you will be expected to have a good comprehension of your host country’s native language. This can be a great opportunity to combine your management studies abroad with the chance to become bilingual!

Studying Management Abroad

The two most common ways to study management abroad are either enrolling directly a foreign university and selecting your own courses, or else embarking on a study abroad program that is custom-built for students of management.  Sometimes instead of a foreign university you can also study at a smaller international or satellite school.

If you enroll at a foreign university then you can benefit from immersing yourself in student life and having access to a full course load to choose from. Some common courses for students who study management abroad include business management, sports management, healthcare management, project management, and many more.

If you choose to choose instead to embark on a specialized management program abroad you may not have the experience of studying full time at a foreign university, but you will gain from a much more focused approach that is custom-tailored for international students. Sometimes these programs are combined with an internship opportunity as well, or may move around between several different destinations while under the guidance of a professor.

Management study abroad programs are generally offered during summer sessions, fall or spring semester, and for full academic year durations. Before committing, be sure to communicate with your home university about which is the most plausible to fit within your degree track!

Benefits & Challenges

Communication. One of the most important aspects of management is facilitating effective communication within a body of people. Living in another country (especially where a different language is spoken) will make you a much more effective communicator.

Cross Cultures. You will also have to learn to negotiate between a diverse body of people from all different cultural backgrounds in management. Travelling and spending time genuinely trying to understand different cultures is the best way to develop this skill.

Break Out. Studying management abroad is not all business; you will have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world, go on countless adventures, and discover yourself as you discover the world.
