7-12 months (includes high school academic year abroad)
Dates
Depart mid-July
The WorldTeach program in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is still developing as first year-long program on Pohnpei Island began in 2006. Volunteers could teach at Pohnpeian high schools, in the capital of Kolonia, or in more rural sites. Primary education is compulsory for Grades 18. Children are required to begin first grade at the age of six. However, entrance to high school is determined by achievement on an entrance examination and only about one-third of the elementary graduates pass the examination annually.
Pohnpeian is the native language, but English is commonly spoken throughout the FSM, especially on Pohnpei. High school students will know English well, meaning that all classes will be taught in English. Volunteers should be prepared to teach Math, Science or English, and to be flexible to the needs of the school. Applicants with college classes in Math and Science will be given preference, although a Math or Science degree is not a requirement.
Placements & Housing
Volunteers on Pohnpei will live in Kolonia, the main town, or in Madolenihmw or Kitti, the sites of the two rural high schools on the island. Volunteers will live together in apartments or houses.
On Kosrae, volunteers will have the option to live with either a host family or in a furnished house or apartment with other volunteers, all within relatively easy traveling distance to school.
Micronesians are welcoming and thoughtful volunteers should have no problem getting to know the interesting culture of the FSM.
