Hotel Sales & Marketing in Thailand: A Gratifying Experience

For my internship, I worked for three months at Maikhao Dream Villa Resort & Spa in Phuket, Thailand. Coming in to program, my goal was to enhance my knowledge of hotel management, sales, and marketing. The World Internships' program helped me reach this goal while at the same time discover the niceties of an East Asian culture. Phuket, and Thailand in general, is great for someone who enjoys learning about culture, exploring the outdoors, and who wants to work in the tourism industry. While Thai people are extremely nice and accommodating, independence is key. If you're someone who gets frustrated easily, cannot venture on their own, or needs western comforts, Thailand may not be the best option. But if you're ready for a fun challenge, I highly suggest enrolling in WI's program in Phuket!
No problems with the program administration and great program organization.
While English was prevalent in Thailand, it was great to work in a department where English was not the primary language.
My accommodations were quiet, basic accommodations. However, there was no internet and the bathroom was... rustic.
If you would like to try authentic Thai cuisine, you can't beat the floating restaurants by Maprao Island off the east coast of Phuket. Take a 10 minute boat ride to Black Crab Restaurant (English name). The restaurant is built on a a floating deck attached to the mangrove roots below. On the pier, there are "holes" which act as live seafood traps; point to the fish of your choice and they'll steam or grill it in front of you (of course lemongrass and chilis are applied generously). Nothing is fresher than that!
Never felt in danger, but be smart. Don't leave bags or personal items unaccompanied.
Actually had to use the insurance provided by WI. Everything worked without a hitch!
