Liberal Arts
Students at Wilson experience a broad liberal arts education, including exposure to the arts, history, cultural studies, foreign language, social science, science, and environmental studies. Broad exposure is complemented by depth in a field. Wilson College educates students in a strong liberal arts tradition to prepare them for rewarding and challenging careers, for leadership roles in a global society, for service to others, and for a lifetime of learning. In essence, students are better prepared for the demands and challenges of lives and careers in a complex society, and for social and civic responsibilities.
Academic Community
Our strong sense of community is born of a culture, which is supportive, empathetic, accepting of differences, and dedicated to serious academic achievement. The community edifice is strengthened by establishing and supporting a student body which is diverse in economic background, cultural background, ethnicity, and religious denomination and providing opportunities for students to be engaged in mutually supportive and enriching experiences across economic, cultural, ethnic, racial, and religious lines. Wilson's smallness, rich traditions, and our appreciation of the college's history also build a strong community.
Personalized Instruction
The importance of individualized instruction and assessment of individual progress is supported by a low student-to-faculty ratio and a strong, personalized advising program. Wilson's well-qualified faculty serve as role models, mentors, and facilitators of learning both inside and outside of the classroom. Greater than 75 percent of the full-time faculty have doctorates or the comparable terminal degree within their respective fields. More than 50 percent of the faculty are women. Faculty and students engage in collaborative teaching, learning, and research.
Learning Outside the Classroom
The college's mission, curriculum, policies, and culture also support learning through participation in various activities, including residence hall programs, recreational sports, intercollegiate athletics, community service work, internships, student teaching, paid work opportunities, student clubs, and cultural and special events.
Tradition of Excellence
Wilson is dedicated to fulfilling a tradition of excellence. Wilson College is recognized for academic excellence, for the high quality of its teaching faculty, and for its outstanding facilities and academic resources. For 132 years, Wilson graduates have excelled in their chosen fields including prominent positions in business, education, government, law, medicine, and research. The acceptance rate for students applying to graduate and professional schools is very high.
The academic life at Wilson is rigorous. Wilson's challenging liberal arts curriculum emphasizes development of skills and habits of mind that will last a lifetime, including strong writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills. Within our small, yet diverse, academic community, students are fully engaged in the learning process, supported by small interactive classes and faculty mentoring. The college's strong Honor Principle fosters development of personal and academic integrity in a supportive community setting.
