I would seriously encourage anyone considering studying for a TESOL qualification to take this course. From the moment that I arrived in China and was met at the airport WillExcel did everything and more that could be expected of them. The accommodation was excellent, the staff friendly and helpful and above all the teaching from Kyle David and others was outstanding. When researching which TESOL course to take I noticed that many people stressed the heavy workload involved. This is certainly true, however, the teaching in this course made it extremely interesting and not tedious. I had no formal teaching experience prior to this and whilst it can be a nervous time before your first classes I knew what I had to do and what to expect thanks to this course. The partner school which I worked for after the formal part of the course were perfect employers - in fact I am still working there. Over the course of my last 20 working years I've had three employers and my favourite by far has been my Chinese one! Downsides? Quite simply none. Please feel free to contact me with questions, I will be delighted to help.
When coming China to teach was something I began seriously considering, I wanted to find the best possible training to prepare me for the classroom, not the fastest or easiest. I didn't just want to learn to teach, but learn to teach well. When I found Will-Excel, I saw that what they were offering was a cut above the rest in terms of the training and the incredible support you get during your time in the program. It wasn't long until I realized that I had made the right choice. The training is very excellent . It covers a wide range of skills, but covers them very clearly, and will prepare a teacher for real-life situations in the classroom, and prepares a teacher to teach any kind of student. I am happy to have completed this course, and having completed it has allowed me to continue to grow and take bigger steps in China.
As a graduate of Will Excel, my course was August 2007 to March 2008; I would like to ease the mind of anyone who is considering attending the course. First a little background. I am not a young teacher, but someone who has travelled all his life and held various different positions in various different careers. My intentions on applying to be a TESOL teacher were not to have the China experience, but to become a teacher. Being a little older, I was naturally concerned that I would not find this very easy, or perhaps I wouldn't succeed at all. However, I was mistaken. Was it easy? Well you have to work at it, but that is true of anything you want to be good at. Could I actually 'do it?' Right from day one, I felt that I had made the right decision. I joined a class of five other prospective teachers from various native speaking countries, all who were there to learn. I also found out straight away that Will Excel shared a lot of my views and a lot of my values. Teaching is not a hobby, it is a profession. Before I started, like most native English speakers, (I'm from the UK), I knew I could speak English correctly, but would I ever be able to re-learn the grammar well enough to teach it. I needn't have worried. The staff of Will Excel were all very professional in their approach. In particular, Kyle (Lead Instructor / Dean of Studies), was able to instill the enthusiasm that he obviously has into all of us students. Both he and Jason, (Sponsor school management), had a wealth of classroom experience that was to become a welcome part of the 'toolkit' once we started teaching. Dan, (President of Will Excel), also provided very valuable information, not only concerning teaching, but also life in China, possible culture shock etc. This latter subject was not a worry for me, my wife is Chinese, but it was a worry for some of the other students. They soon felt as much at ease here as I do. Part of the training includes actual teaching, 500 hours worth in fact. I was a little worried when I took my first class alone at Sunshine International School. This is one of the partner schools of Will Excel. However, with what I had learned, and with the confidence gained during the TESOL course, I quickly settled in and found that I really enjoy teaching. It made me question why I had never thought of this many, many years ago. In summary, if you are unsure, don't worry. If you believe you have the capability to become a teacher, then Will Excel has the power to unleash that capability, with your help of course. They will make you, as their slogan so rightly says, 'An Unforgettable Teacher!'
From my own personal experience combined with other people's testimonials and research of many other courses this is the best you could possibly find. The course covers everything you need to know to get started with teaching, and living, in China. You will refresh your mind on English grammar and go right through to the history of Chinese education. The tutors are fantastic people and there is no end to the amount of support that they are willing to give you. Also, this course is packed with extra little perks that very few else would provide. Free meals twice a day, free transportation between school branches, mandarin lessons and plenty of time to observe experienced teachers and ask them questions. There will be lots of hard work in this intensive course but every second of it is worthwhile. You will feel fully prepared and confident to enter any classroom and teach effectively by the end of the fourth week. I would just like to use this opportunity to thank Will-Excel as I am now doing very well working for the brilliant Sunshine language centre in Harbin.
Will-Excel was a really intense experience. The TESOL course feels a lot longer than the month. Course has a great location with better than average accommodations for the city. If you want an adventure this is one to try out.
