As a leading metropolitan university, we achieve our mission at Widener by creating a learning environment where curricula are connected to societal issues through civic engagement.
We lead by providing a unique combination of liberal arts and professional education in a challenging, scholarly, and culturally diverse academic community. We engage our students through dynamic teaching, active scholarship, personal attention, and experiential learning. We inspire our students to be citizens of character who demonstrate professional and civic leadership. We contribute to the vitality and well-being of the communities we serve.
Widener University is a unique private institution located in the Philadelphia suburbs. Because we are private, our orientation is distinctly different from large, public universities. Our emphasis is on challenging, motivating, and assisting each student to realize his or her individual potential.
Widener is a selective, comprehensive university offering more than 145 programs of study. Our academic vitality stems in part from a synergistic relationship with the numerous international firms whose headquarters are our neighbors. Within six months after graduation, close to 80 percent of our graduates accept jobs in their chosen professions; approximately 15 percent continue on to graduate studies or professional schools of medicine, law, dentistry, and the like.
Widener's personality encourages students to develop lifelong friends and mentors. The faculty and staff provide an intellectual climate and caring environment that makes our own students our best recruiters. Each year, more than 15 percent of our freshman class are legacies following the footsteps of a sibling or parent. Each year, too, some 160 students transfer from other "usually larger" institutions to Widener.
