  • Description

Our program in Tibet offers students the unique opportunity to explore and experience a nation that is among the most remote, culturally rich and culturally challenged places on Earth. Accenting the dramatic landscape and nestled among towering peaks are majestic monasteries, Buddhist stuppas, and layers of dangling prayer flags. Hiking across the Himalayas to a vast land that still sees few foreigners, we witness the lives of a remarkable people who live under occupation; we discover the heart and depth of their culture; and we expand our understanding of perseverance. We begin our program exploring the temples, shrines and monuments of Nepal's Kathmandu Valley. We enjoy an introductory hike through the foothills of the Himalayas, and then we travel to Pokhara, where we stay with refugee Tibetan families. After our home-stay and service work, we board a plane and fly over Mount Everest to Lhasa, the capitol of Tibet. We travel to countryside villages and ancient monasteries, visit nunneries, meditate in caves, and trek through some of the most beautiful places on Earth. Following an overland trip back to Kathmandu via the base camp of Mount Everest, our program concludes with an awesome descent straight through the Himalayas..
