  • Description

The WMU program at the Universidad de Cantabria offers qualified students the opportunity to study Spanish language and culture in university courses especially designed for them.

Students in the program will take intensive Spanish language classes over eight weeks with an emphasis on written and oral communication, as well as Spanish grammar. In addition, they will take a four-week class in Spanish culture. This course will be taught by a faculty member from the WMU Department of Spanish and will include an extended weekend trip and various daytrips to region(s) in Spain that will be representative of numerous aspects of Spanish culture studied in class.

Santander is a medium-sized city with approximately 200,000 inhabitants. It is the capital of Cantabria, which has a surface area of 5,289 kilometers and a population of 526,866. Its boundaries are the Cantabrian Sea to the north, the autonomous region of Castilla-Leon to the south, the Basque Country to the east, and Asturias to the west. Santander was founded in the 18th century and developed in the following century thanks to flourishing commercial activity. The city became a popular tourist destination in the 20th century when the Spanish royal family promoted its beautiful beaches and appealing climate. Santander is still favored by central and southern Spanish tourists, yet experiences relatively little international tourism.
