With the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1, 1949, Beijing became the capital of the new republic and has since evolved into a political and cultural center of China, as well as a center of international activity and a key transportation hub. The city is located in northeastern China and is surrounded by mountains on the west, the north and the northeast. The northeastern section of the city is topographically high, while the southwestern part is low. Beijing has a continental monsoon climate with four distinct seasons. Spring and autumn are short, while winter and summer are long.
