  • Description

Volunteer in Thailand with children victims of the Tsunami.

  • Highlights

After the 2004 tsunami, this orphanage opened its doors to care, and offers a safe environment for children and families affected by this disaster. There is a big need for ongoing economic and social aid for the children in this area. From the start the orphanage wanted to give security and understanding, somewhere those children in need can feel they have a family.

Volunteering with victims of the tsunami is a great opportunity to experience working with children from all walks of life. Not all the kids are orphans, some of them may still have one or both parents, but for several reasons such as unemployment, remarriage or being neglected, these children are not provided with the proper care. This project aims to provide a safe place to live and does its best to do it.

This project depends on your help as a volunteer and also on money from private donors and institutional grants. The main financial goal is to make the children's home self-sustainable. In order to do it, children develop several activities such as helping to bake muffins and cookies to sell at school for pocket money. With the help of the volunteers, this 'business' is being expanded into the local markets during the peak season. There is also a garden to provide with fresh produce and a line of craft products to sell.

WAVA's Responsible Travel policy is its mission statement. It's not an ideology. It is not a cast-iron set of rigid guidelines and procedures. Rather, it is a spectrum of principles and concepts that promote co-operation and learning not only by those in the London office, but also with all other parties involved - travellers, partners and host communities - ensuring each can mutually benefit. We do our best to understand our travellers' needs, responsibly preparing them to have great experiences, and we produce content that accurately informs our travellers of what they can expect to encounter when abroad.
