Volunteer with children in South Africa for a Social Project.
In South Africa, there are some disadvantaged communities that can only rely on local charities to provide better quality education and care for babies, toddlers and pre-school.
This particular charity also offers training in childcare skills, child development and stimulation to unemployed women, creche workers and community workers. However, there is still a lot of work that needs to be done...
The day-care centers provide activities and three meals a day for about 150 kids from 7 months to 6 years old. There is a big need for an 'extra hand' in this social project as there are only 11 permanent staff available.
As a volunteer you will be assisting the teachers of the biggest group of kids - the 4 to 6 years old. What does 'assisting teachers' mean? Assisting teachers is doing all the fun activities with the kids: telling stories, singing, playing and helping them discover crafts, art and music.
If you prefer you can also help and look after the babies and the younger kids.
Once you arrive in Strand, your first day will be able to get to know a bit more about the project and the people. At your induction you will be provided with information such as:
* The history of the project and the social problems that originated the development of this particular social project
* Information about activities/games for pre-schoolers
* The main differences between the education system in the UK and South Africa
* Visit the project and meet the staff and the children
Your main tasks as a volunteer will be assisting the teachers and staff with the pre-schools, help feeding the little ones at lunchtime and help in the nursery.
You are expected to be at the Day Care Centre from Monday to Friday from 9am to 3pm. However, since the afternoons will involve more supervising than actually "teaching", you are more than welcome if you feel you have strength enough to "play" for a couple of hours more the project is very flexible.
* Minimum age: 18 years old
* A high level of English.
* Since you will be working with children, you need to be an outgoing and enthusiastic person with a great sense of humor and a genuine care and concern for children.
* International volunteers are welcome.

WAVA's Responsible Travel policy is its mission statement. It's not an ideology. It is not a cast-iron set of rigid guidelines and procedures. Rather, it is a spectrum of principles and concepts that promote co-operation and learning not only by those in the London office, but also with all other parties involved - travellers, partners and host communities - ensuring each can mutually benefit. We do our best to understand our travellers' needs, responsibly preparing them to have great experiences, and we produce content that accurately informs our travellers of what they can expect to encounter when abroad.

After my time at the Amazon Rainforest in Ecuador it would be hard to say that my views and concerns about environmental issues were not somehow changed by my experience. Living in the rainforest w...
