The project provides medical care as well as a home for up to 30 children - its main objective is to create self-sufficiency and competency for children and families living with HIV and AIDS.
The success of this project lies in its ability to provide an effective paediatric AIDS hospice that offers children specialized paediatric and palliative care 24 hours a day. It is a place where children can receive a high quality of care in addition to their treatment.
There is an urgent need in South Africa to help children who have been inflicted with HIV/AIDS. This program involves working at a HIV/AIDS orphanage & hospice that has been providing care to children since July 2003.
Your specific duties can change daily and will ultimately be dependent on the effort and enthusiasm that you demonstrate whilst working at the project. Basic volunteer tasks will include assisting the hospice staff in feeding, stimulating and playing with the children. Other duties at this project may include:
* Accompanying the children to the clinic or on outings.
* Helping provide relief from pain
* Providing an emotional support system for the children.
* Interacting with the children and offering support and even friendship.
* Assisting teachers in their planned daily activities at the Early Childhood Development Centre.
* Minimum Age: 18 years old.
* You do not need to have a background in health care, however any relevant experience that you do have can increase the level of responsibilities that you will be given.
* If you are a medical or a nursing professional, you will need to be registered with the South African government regulatory bodies in order to perform invasive procedures.
* Good spoken English.
* International Volunteers are welcome.
* Since you will be working with children, you need to be mature, confident, demonstrate initiative, and be open-minded and enthusiastic with a genuine care and concern for children.

WAVA's Responsible Travel policy is its mission statement. It's not an ideology. It is not a cast-iron set of rigid guidelines and procedures. Rather, it is a spectrum of principles and concepts that promote co-operation and learning not only by those in the London office, but also with all other parties involved - travellers, partners and host communities - ensuring each can mutually benefit. We do our best to understand our travellers' needs, responsibly preparing them to have great experiences, and we produce content that accurately informs our travellers of what they can expect to encounter when abroad.
