The medical center offers health care to the people of the District of Chorrillos - Lima. The clinic serves approximately 70 - 80 patients per day, with a variety of conditions from the common cold to HIV/AIDS.
In addition to general medicine, the center also has a dentist, a pharmacy and a laboratory.
Health education programs are offered at the health center and in the local community. There are opportunities for both medical professionals and medical trainees to volunteer on the project.
Following your arrival in Lima, you will receive your induction. As you arrive at the airport in Lima, a transfer will be waiting to take you to your Peruvian Host family.
The following morning, our local coordinator will pick you up from your house for the start of your induction.
The 3-day introduction to the country and your placement will help you settle into Peruvian life and will cover sessions on culture and customs, a walking tour of Lima, transportation to the projects and information for excursions to local places of interest.
If you would like to improve your language skills, Spanish courses are also available: 2 hours per day Monday to Friday. Courses start every Monday. You can either concentrate on studying Spanish before you start your volunteer placement, or you can combine the language course with your volunteering. Living with your host family, you will also receive breakfast and evening meals.
Your daily activities will greatly depend upon your level of medical experience. A CV will be requested along with your application, allowing the Doctors to assess where you will best be able to assist. Trainee medical professionals will initially adopt a more observational role, with the level of "hands on" experience developing in time.
All volunteers will have the opportunity to assist with health education campaigns and prepare small workshops for the community.
Working hours are flexible, although you should expect to work either a morning or afternoon shift. Morning shifts are 08:00am to 14:00 and afternoon shifts are 13:00 to 17:00.

WAVA's Responsible Travel policy is its mission statement. It's not an ideology. It is not a cast-iron set of rigid guidelines and procedures. Rather, it is a spectrum of principles and concepts that promote co-operation and learning not only by those in the London office, but also with all other parties involved - travellers, partners and host communities - ensuring each can mutually benefit. We do our best to understand our travellers' needs, responsibly preparing them to have great experiences, and we produce content that accurately informs our travellers of what they can expect to encounter when abroad. To find out more about WAVA's Responsible Travel policy and principles, please visit WAVA's website.
