Volunteering to assist with disabled children is a valuable and worthwhile way to spend your time overseas. Since 1993, The Special School in Phuket has provided a safe and educational haven for disabled, autistic and deaf individuals from age 6 to 21.
The school aims to provide the children with a caring and stimulating environment to help them to reach their full potential. The school also boasts a life skills and occupational center to help the children prepare for life after the school. There are 270 children who stay at the school from five provinces, cared for by a dedicated team of staff who require additional assistance with caring for and teaching the children from nursery to secondary level.
Upon arrival, our local coordinator will introduce you to the staff at the center, show you to your room and make sure that you are settled in and shown around. You will be assisting a teacher in the classroom ensuring that the children receive the attention that they need. You can choose to work with autistic, deaf or mentally impaired children. Classes include life skills, art, occupational training, bakery, sports, educational and developmental play and you are welcome to join each class. The school is well equipped with modern facilities for the children's medical and educational needs. Weekends are free for independent travel, however the school remains open and you can help organize games and sports with the children who live at the school.
Daily schedule:
08.00: Raising of the national flag to the National Anthem
08.00: Morning classes
11.00: Lunch with the children
13.00: Afternoon classes
16.00: School finishes
17.00: Dinner with the children
Whether you are a qualified Carer or experienced around disabled children or not, there are always valuable roles for you to play. Irrespective of your experience, it is important that you:
* Are independent and flexible, creative and able to use your own initiative, yet take direction
* Have a caring nature and are open to learning in this sometimes emotionally demanding role
* Are open to, and respectful of, Thai culture
* You do not need to have a knowledge of the Thai language
* International volunteers are welcome.

WAVA's Responsible Travel policy is its mission statement. It's not an ideology. It is not a cast-iron set of rigid guidelines and procedures. Rather, it is a spectrum of principles and concepts that promote co-operation and learning not only by those in the London office, but also with all other parties involved - travellers, partners and host communities - ensuring each can mutually benefit. We do our best to understand our travellers' needs, responsibly preparing them to have great experiences, and we produce content that accurately informs our travellers of what they can expect to encounter when abroad.
