There are 8 courses required for the certificate. They can be taken in any order and do not have to be completed within a certain time period. The TESL certificate program can be taken online or on-site:
- On-site classes are offered at SPU in the fall, winter, and spring as 5-weeks courses meeting two nights a week. Attending full time during the school year students can complete the program in 6 months.
- The online environment offers a unique and beneficial learning situation. Because of the ability to research before posting to discussions, conversations are more meaningful. Also, the access to the online environment 24 hours of the day offers students here and abroad the opportunity for study. Online classes are 10 weeks long and offered all year. The online program may be completed in 9-12 months depending on how many classes are taken at once.
- In summer all 8 courses can be taken in our intensive series. The intensive courses are week long classes offered at Seattle Pacific University (SPU). You can take a few courses in the summer or all eight. Both campuses provide dorms for you during the summer, if needed. The deadline for enrollment is the Friday at noon before each course.

Our classes have an international reputation for creating excellent teachers. What you learn in these classes will help you to be a successful ELL/ESL instructor.
Courses offered at SPU are graduate level only; each course is for 3 quarter credits for a total of 24 quarter credits. A teaching certificate is not required for these courses.
