Volunteers on the teaching/sports program in Muizenberg will assist with the teaching of different subjects at an elementary school. In the afternoon you will run a soccer program for the kids for different grades. Volunteers also work in community schools. Volunteer teachers can teach English, mathematics, science, geography, social sciences, history, physical education, art and music.

You will be required to tutor and mentor these children on a daily basis. Like most African countries, South Africa has a great number of children who are living in poverty. Although some of the children attend school during the day, some will have nowhere to go once school is out. Therefore, you will see some of these children begging for money on the streets, stealing, drinking and engaging in substance abuse. Volunteering Solutions prevents these children from engaging in such acts, the program will give them something positive to do, while keeping them off the streets. Each program will offer team building exercises, HIV/AIDS awareness lessons, and help assist children with physical disabilities. The program will also run holiday programs in Cape Town communities and townships, in order to keep the kids off the streets while school is out. In addition, the volunteers may also get the opportunity to be involved in feeding programs, and community projects within the township. Our Sport Development program is not just about playing sports, but a program that teaches how sports can help and improve one's life-skills.

Volunteers must be 17 years or older at the beginning of the program. Volunteers need to have an open mind and flexible attitude for working in a new and different environment. The volunteer should bring energy and enthusiasm to make a difference.

Project Location
The project placements are located in and around the capital city of Cape Town. The placements are located in Vrygrond, Muizenberg which is part of Cape Town. The project placements are with host families within the community where you will be volunteering while some of the placements are located within a 5-10 min walk from your host families. There will always be a family member to walk you to your project.

Program Fees Include:

Airport Receive/ Transfer: Volunteers are picked up from the Cape Town International Airport by the local coordinator or representative. Those volunteers who are arriving overland or are already in South Africa will be picked up from the bus station or at a meeting point decided beforehand.

Orientation: A half day orientation will be provided by the local staff. Areas like culture, greetings, locations, transportation, safety and volunteer placements are given during the orientation.

Lodging: Volunteers will be placed with designated host families. Most of them are at the projects themselves or with host families within a 5 min walk from the programs. Breakfast and dinners will be provided by the host families that you are staying with, so if you have any specific dietary needs please indicate that.

Food: Breakfast and dinner will be provided. Weekends, you will need to provide your own food as its your time off from work. We, however, compensate families for food and utilities. You will become a part of the family, eating and sharing life experiences together. It is advisable to purchase snacks for yourself, as it is a long day at work. If you have any special dietary needs, please indicate them under the special dietary needs on the application form. Please note that the placements in childcare program in Capricorn are limited and we suggest volunteers to book in advance to avoid non availability.

In Country travel assistance: Volunteers are assisted by the local staff and coordinators for any kind of assistance they need for their travel arrangements. The local staff and coordinators will be happy to assist you in making travel arrangements within Cape Town and to famous tourist locations nearby.

In-country support: 24 hours support provided by our local staff. You will be provided with the contact details of the local coordinator and staff who will be contactable 24 hrs once you are in country.

Pre-departure information: After we receive full and final payment all participants are provided by a pre-departure information booklet which will have all vital information about your program. The Pre-Departure Information Booklet provides the complete details of the country, project locations, Visas, Immunizations, Things to Pack list, Accommodations, Contact Information etc.

During your Free Time
Volunteers can go and visit the different places of interest in Cape Town. The most popular places are Table Mountain, Garden Route, Ostrich Farm, Wine Tasting, Safaris and much more.

You are also recommended to visit the World famous Robben Island, where he spent 27 years imprisoned and then after becoming The President of South Africa. Cape Town is listed among the Top places to visit in the world.
