In this program volunteers mainly support formal education and will teach English for 3 to 4 hours each day for 5 days a week in Katmandu (Saturdays and Sundays are free) and 6 days a week outside Katmandu (Saturday is the only day off). Besides formal teaching, they will be involved in encouraging students to take initiation and organize extracurricular learning activities for life-skills and personal development. They will form student groups and strengthen them with capacity-building training and by disseminating information on Children's rights, Sanitation and Hygiene, and Adolescent Health issues through various non-formal activities, such as debates, quiz contests, art competitions, folk song competitions, organization rallies, organizing street dramas, etc.
Government school children will be 5 to 16 years of age and the number of students per class can range from 20 to 50; however, volunteers will focus a great deal of their time teaching groups before and after school. Due to lack of resources and other disturbances, schools are not regularly opened, sometimes for some days at a time. Therefore, it is very important that volunteers may have to provide after school, for groups of all ages, so that children can continue their studies as well as simply have something to occupy their time. These classes also reach out to those in the community who cannot attend formal school, either because of financial difficulties or other responsibilities.
VSSN can also provide opportunities, for volunteers who are interested, to teach other subjects like mathematics, environment, art, music, sports, and other vocational subjects.
Very good at English Language.
