    Spanish Language and Culture in Cordoba

    The Global Education Office and the VCU School of World Studies are pleased to offer a unique opportunity to study Spanish language and culture in the beautiful and historic city of Cordoba, Spain, with four additional excursions. Students will enjoy an intensive four-week Spanish language program conducted in conjunction with the University of Cordoba (UCOIDIOMAS). Courses will be taught by qualified native Spanish speaker philology graduates, specialized in teaching Spanish as a foreign language.

    Course and credit options: 3 or 6 VCU credits (6 credits only when combining SPAN 201 and SPAN 205)

    Course description:

    Designed as a full immersion program where classes are divided into three morning sessions. Classes are Monday through Thursday from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. (a half-hour break daily), for a total of 60 hours. Excursions are conducted on Fridays. Contents include grammar skills practicum and Spanish culture and society, Spanish history, Spanish literature and art. Cultural activities are included in the program.

    This program is directed by Victor M. Pena, adjunct Spanish professor with the VCU School of World Studies who possesses a vast knowledge of traveling, Spanish culture and studying in Spain with more than 12 years experience in taking students to Spain. This is his fourth time directing the VCU program to Spain.

    While in Spain, students will study Spanish language and culture in the beautiful and historic city of Cordoba. There are four planned excursions for this program:
    * La Mezquita Catedral de Córdoba y paseo por La Judería
    * Museo Arqueológico de Córdoba, Museo Julio Romero de Torres y Corredera
    * Ruinas de Medina Azahara y Casa Sefarad
    * El Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos

    In addition to these, the city of Cordoba will be celebrating the Noche Blanca del Flamenco the second week of June and students will partake of the festivities, exhibitions, performances and workshops.

    Housing:
    Students will live with a host family. Two meals a day will be included.

    Please budget for these additional expenses.

    Airfare is not included. Participants are responsible for making their own round-trip travel arrangements from the US to their destination city. Program directors will meet with accepted students to go over specific travel logistics and may help students in identifying low-cost travel options. For best fares, students are encouraged to purchase their tickets prior to April 15.

      Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA in order to participate in the VCU summer study abroad program. In order to receive academic credit, students must have fulfilled all pre-requisite Spanish coursework prior to the program start date. All participants must be approved by the program director before acceptance into the program. An academic letter of reference is required.
