Three to four credits are available in Italian language and literature. Intermediate and advanced courses require attendance in grammar, syntax, reading, conversation and literature classes. Prerequisites apply.
The program is directed by Cinzia Corubolo, a professor of Italian and French at VCU School of World Studies. Cinzia has a lot of experience in taking students on study abroad programs in many towns in Italy.
While in Italy
There will be a day trip to Siena and Cortona, or Florence, and one to Assisi, some of the most beautiful towns of the wonderful Tuscany region. There will also be two weekend trips. One will go to Naples, Pompeii and Capri. On Saturday, participants will bask in the hustle and bustle of Naples. Then, we will set our clocks back to 79 A.D. and take a stroll through the streets of Pompeii, where participants will see that the city of the dead is still very much alive. We will spend the night at a three-star hotel in the area. Sunday will be spent in Capri, where you will enjoy the romantic and relaxing atmosphere of the island of love, have a chance to brush against the rich and famous and take a plunge in the deep blue sea. The second weekend trip will be to Milan, the capital of fun, fashion and design. We will spend the first day visiting the city (a tour from Roman and medieval monuments to the latest trends of modern architecture). In the second day we will visit Pavia (close to Milan) and its beautiful Certosa, one of the most important examples of gothic-renaissance buildings in northern Italy. The last two days of the program will be spent in Rome to see the Coliseum, the Fori Imperiali, the Capitol, beautiful churches and world famous piazzas.
Participants share private apartments with cooking facilities. Meals, which are not included in the program cost, may be taken at the university cafeteria for approximately USD10 per meal or in any of the beautiful small Italian cafes scattered around the city (prices vary).
