    Italian Language and Culture in Fondi

    The Global Education Office and the VCU School of World Studies, in conjunction with the Instituto San Francesco in Fondi, Italy and Associazione Insieme in Formia, Italy are proud to offer an innovative summer study-abroad program in Italy that you will not easily forget! The program takes place in Fondi, a fascinating small town in central Italy offering a unique opportunity of full immersion in Italian language and culture. According to legend, Fondi was founded by a mythical character known to most as Hercules. The city is located half way between Rome and Naples providing easy access to the main historical and artistic sites in central Italy.

    Course and Credit Options: 6-7 VCU Credits
    * ITAL 102 Elementary Italian (4 credits)
    * ITAL 201 Intermediate Italian (3 credits)
    * ITAL 202 Intermediate Italian Readings (3 credits)
    * ITAL 205 Intermediate Italian Conversation (3 credits)
    * ITAL 300 Advanced Italian Conversation and Composition (3 credits)
    * WRLD 391 (3 credits)

    Course Description:
    World 391: Students will focus on the history of ancient Rome. The course will cover the foundation of Rome, the Republic, and the expansion of the empire.

    Italian language courses: Students will receive intensive Italian instruction, during the four weeks at the Istituto San Francesco and Associazione Insieme. All instructors are native Italian with a vast experience teaching Italian as a second language.

    The program will be led by Ms. Paola Carlucci, a native of Milan, who has been teaching Italian at VCU for 6 years. Paola Carlucci has a degree in Translation from the University of Trieste (Italy) and a M.A. in Italian Literature from the University of Virginia.

  • Highlights

    While in Italy
    Students will participate in several excursions during their stay in Fondi to explore Italian history and culture. Students will visit Rome (ancient Rome, forum, and Vatican City), Pompeli (archeological site), Florence (Duomo, Palazzo della Signoria, etc.), Pisa, Naples, and Gaeta.

    Housing:
    Students will be housed in apartments in a historical neighborhood in Fondi, Italy. These apartments do not have a kitchen, however, for an additional fee, home-made meals will be provided by a cook dedicated exclusively to the students in this program.     The program fee is approximately USD2,100 - USD2,300 and includes the following:

    Please budget for these additional expenses.

    Airfare is not included. Participants are responsible for their own round-trip travel arrangements from the U.S. to Italy. Professor Carlucci will assist participants in identifying low-cost options. For best fares you should purchase your ticket no later than May 1, 2012.
