    Eastern European Theatre

    The Global Education Office, the Department of Theatre and the School of the Arts at Virginia Commonwealth University are pleased to offer a journey to two destinations in Eastern Europe. The program includes an 8-day intensive workshop exploring Eastern European theatre techniques with the DAH Theatre. Participants will also be able to experience firsthand the International Theatre Festival in Sibiu, Romania, as well as the mystical world of Transylvania.

    Course and Credit Options: 3-6 undergraduate or graduate VCU credits
    * THEA 340 and THEA 341: Eastern European Theatre
    * THEA 640 and THEA 641: Eastern European Theatre (graduate students only)

    Course Description:
    During the first 8 days of the program, participants will reside in Belgrade, Serbia and participate in an intense study of acting based on the teachings of Eugenia Barba and Jerzy Grotowski. In the evening students will attend theatre, music and dance performances in Belgrade. Students will then travel to the Sibiu International Theatre Festival in Sibiu, Romania where they will have the opportunity to attend theatre, music and dance performances by companies from around the world. In addition to this, participants will also be able to experience life in a small Romanian city filled with exquisite art and architecture as well as travel to Sighisoara and Bran Castle.

  • Highlights

    While in Serbia and Romania

    Excursions include a visit to Sighisoara, the birthplace of the infamous Dracula, a trip to Bran Castle, the setting of Bram Stoker's Count Dracula story, as well as a full day to explore the story-book city of Sibiu. Students will also have the unique opportunity to participate in workshops and attend performances during the Sibiu Theatre Festival.

    Housing:

    Participants will stay with families in Belgrade and at the Ibis Centru Sibiu-Hermannstadt Hotel in Sibiu. Meals are included.

    The program will be led by Prof. Janet Rodgers, an instructor of Theatre at VCU. She will be assisted by Prof. Pamela Arkin from Longwood University. Professor Rodgers has been leading Summer Study Abroad trips to Eastern Europe since 2000.

    The program fee is approximately USD3,300 - USD3,500 and includes the following:
    * Round-trip airfare from Washington, DC, to Belgrade, Serbia

    The following are not included in the program fee. Students are responsible for:
    * VCU tuition and fees

    * Personal expenses during the program estimated at USD200

    Students will be traveling as a group. Round-trip airfare between Washington, DC, and Belgrade, Serbia, is included in the program fee, as is all in-country transportation. Your full name as it appears on your passport must be submitted to the program director for the purpose of purchasing your airfare at the time of registration.

      The program is limited to 14 students and is open to all interested Theatre students at Virginia Commonwealth University and Longwood University. All Theatre VCU and Longwood University participants are required to schedule a personal interview in order to be considered for this program. VCU applicants should schedule with Prof. Janet Rodgers while Longwood applicants should schedule with Prof. Pamela Arkin. If, by the application deadline of February 1, there are still openings on the course, the trip will then be opened to theatre students from other institutions of higher learning. An academic letter of reference is required for all non-VCU applicants; Theatre VCU students are not required to submit a letter of reference. If required, please submit this with your application materials after submitting the online form.
