The Via Lingua Florence TEFL Program is an intensive 120-hour training course to teach and travel throughout the world. The course is essentially practical and is assessed continuously. In the morning, there are input sessions on the skills and methods of teaching. The afternoon consists of teaching practice (in small groups), lesson observation and lesson preparation.
The course is divided into six areas:
1. Classroom Management
This topic includes classroom arrangement, managing, resource materials, maintaining discipline, giving instructions, the role of student and teacher etc.
2. Teaching skills
This is a very practical element of the course aimed at building the trainees skills in areas such as teaching grammar, vocabulary, business English, creating own materials, correction skills etc.
3. Language Awareness
This section of the course aims to consolidate the trainees knowledge of grammar and provide practical ideas as to how it can be taught.
4. Phonology
Focuses on areas such as stress, intonation, rhythm and the International Phonetic Alphabet.
5. Unknown Language
Candidates are put into the position of language students and will be taught an unknown foreign language. This gives candidates a chance to view lessons as a student and note techniques used by the teacher when teaching beginners.
6. Teaching Practice
The most practical and important element of the course. Trainees teach real students of English and put into practice the skills learnt on the course.
Candidates who satisfy all course requirements receive the TEFL certificate. For candidates who exceed the normal requirements we offer a TEFL certificate with Merit grade. Occasionally, for particularly outstanding candidates, we give a TEFL certificate with distinction.
