  • Description

    * Tropical Ecology
    Learn about the function of tropical ecosystems. Different biological and environmental dynamics of the area between the Tropic of Capricorn and the Tropic of Cancer are discussed, with emphasis on American and Venezuelan tropical ecosystems. Includes field assignments in sites of ecological interest, for which one laboratory credit is granted.

    * Field Botany in the Andes
    Introduction to basic knowledge of the flora of the Venezuelan Andes, its diversity, ecology and geographical distribution. Includes morphology, identification of plant characteristics, ethno-botany and natural history of Andean vegetation. Fieldwork assignments complement classroom instruction.

    * Sustainable Tropical Agriculture
    This course focuses on the physical, chemical and biological conditions necessary to both establish & support agricultural crops while sustaining overall performance. Students will develop the capacity to understand the functionality of a sustainable tropical agricultural system.

    * Natural Resource Economics
    This course discusses the foundations and principles of sustainable natural resource development. It focuses on the conservation, preservation, and/or use of natural resources in Venezuela, with a particular emphasis on the Andes of Venezuela. Students will also compare & contrast Venezuelan practices to environmental development practices that exist in various countries of the world.

    Courses taught in both English and Spanish.
