  • Description

    Attend classes at UW Oshkosh, then travel to Uganda. The core of the seminar in Uganda is a lecture series given by experts in the fields of history, politics, geography, economics, development philosophies, social anthropology, and the arts and humanities. Lectures are supplemented with relevant site visits.

    Course Dates

    Inability or failure to attend may affect your participation, course grades and ability to receive and use financial aid. If you cannot attend, you must indicate this on your study abroad application.

    All participating students must attend class on campus at UW Oshkosh just before travel.

    Choose one:

    Human Services 325 - Intermediate Field Experience (3 credits)
    Prerequisite: Human Services 203, Human Services 310, a third Human Services course for a total of 9 units, and Admission I.

    Human Services 375 - Special Topics (3 credits)
    Prerequisite: Faculty consent

    Human Services 411 3 units (crs.)
    Prerequisite: Human Services 320, 340 and 360.

    Human Services 420 - Field Experience (3 credits)
    Prerequisite: Completion of or concurrent enrollment in Human Services 410 and Admission II.

    Education Leadership 719 - Issues in Professional Leadership (3 credits)
    Prerequisite: Applicants must be admitted to one of the following graduate level programs: Education Administration, Special Education, Counseling, Ed Leadership, Curriculum and Instruction, Nursing, Speech and Hearing Science, Reading, Public Administration, or Business Administration or must be a practicing professional leader. The courses listed above will not count towards all graduate degrees, however.

    Major Course Objectives:

    * To expose students to the present-day cultural, economic, political, and social realities of Uganda and East Africa;

    * To acquire knowledge of Ugandan history, with particular emphasis on the postcolonial period, to understand current developmental trends and processes, and to identify the historical factors, both internal and external, that continue to define and affect Uganda as an emerging nation;

    * To examine society and social change in Uganda with special reference to the impact of globalization on Uganda's culture, as well as on Uganda's ethnic, social class, gender relations, family patterns, and community organization;

    * To develop a sense of self-understanding and cross-cultural awareness in each student based on respect for differing ways of life

    * To examine ethical questions embedded in the conceptualization and practice of globalization and development strategies;

    * To investigate various western and African ideologies in support or negation of globalization.

    Program fees cover course-related expenses (no tuition is assessed); visa fees (at U.S. citizen rate); accommodations in Uganda as listed on the finalized itinearary; meals in Uganda while on campus; tours/visits (including transportation and entrance fees) listed on the finalized itinerary; pre-travel orientation; and international health insurance. The program itinerary may be tentative and will not be finalized until approximately two weeks before departure.

    Program fees do not cover items not specifically mentioned above such as trip cancellation and baggage insurance; passports; immunizations; airfare; transportation between UW Oshkosh and the airport; all other meals, food and beverages; immunizations and anti-malarial drugs; and all expenses of a purely personal nature. Estimates for some of these expenses have been included. Fees for a single room are available upon request.
