This volunteer project is an excellent way for sports minded individuals and groups to spend a gap year, career break or short vacation period working in and teaching sports to children. This will truly be a unique and rewarding project for those passionate about sports and fitness and a way to provide students the opportunity to experience the rewarding components of exercise, teamwork, and mental and physical stimulation.
Sports have the innate ability to transcend and unify across cultural boundaries. Volunteering in the sports and physical education program in San Ramon is an ideal placement if you want to immerse yourself in the rich culture of Costa Rican; furthermore, if you're enthusiastic about sports and working with young children this program is an incredible opportunity. You will be coaching whilst developing a sports and physical education program for a low resourced and under funded school in Costa Rica. This is a project where you can definitely leave your mark but keep in mind that creativity and a pioneering spirit are essential qualities to having a rewarding experience.
The objectives of this program are to lead and coach students in sports and recreational activities whilst teaching the importance of a fit and healthy lifestyle. The program is focused on having fun whilst coaching but there will definitely be natural talent to nurture amongst your students.
As the Sports Coach and Physical Education Instructor, you will be teaching 15-20 hours a week in 40 minute blocks from Monday to Friday. The daily schedule will include two morning and two afternoon sessions. You will be working alongside other volunteers and the uVolunteer program coordinator to ensure a quality program for these children. If you have experience in physical education, the project is flexible enough to incorporate planned and prepared activities into the curriculum.
Along with affordable prices, we still manage to offer a comprehensive package that includes standard volunteer management and coordination services such as:
* Airport pick-up service
* Accommodation with a Costa Rican family
* 3 meals a day provided by your host family
* Skilled and knowledgeable in-country staff
* Orientation including a city tour and health & safety briefing
* 24/7 emergency help line
In a primary school of 584 students in San Ramon, it will be your duty, along with other project members, to coach all grades from kindergarten to sixth grade. You will need to provide instruction, including the basic techniques and skills of team and individual sports, and a variety of recreational activities. The ideal volunteer on this program is patient, innovative, enthusiastic about sports, and has good communication and organizational skills. A high beginner to intermediate level of Spanish is required as you will be using Spanish to communicate within the school and with your students and colleagues.
