UPAVIM is “Unidas para vivir mejor”, which translates to “United for a Better Life”. We are a Guatemalan women’s organization established in 1988 in partnership with a Sister Parish group from Minnesota. Our group consists of 75 women from marginalized communities in Zone 12 of Guatemala City, Villa Lobos I and II, El Mezquital, La Esperanza, and Búcaro. We are homemakers and mothers whom some are widows, struggling with alcoholism, left by husbands, and/or dealing with domestic violence. Many of us are working as sole providers for our families. Hence, our organization is committed to women empowerment with programs aimed at providing opportunities to enhance the quality of life for families and for our members. We give women access to programs for professional and personal development, healthcare services, daycare services for their kids, employment opportunities, and education.
