Centre for Contemporary China was set up in 2004 to develop the University's academic links with China. Since then, the Centre has developed strategic partnerships including Nanjing University, with which it has established a joint international college and created a joint research centre, initially concentrating on the fields of public health, oceanography and higher education management. In addition, it has established strong relationships with Peking University, Tsinghua University Shenzhen Graduate School, Shanghai University of Finance and Economics and Ocean University of China, Qingdao (Southampton's sister city), etc. The Centre also manages the Innovation China UK (ICUK) project, funded from a successful Higher Education Innovation Fund bid to support knowledge transfer activities with Chinese universities.
