With a diverse population of nearly 1.4 million people, Quito is a vibrant and modern city, and although it is located only 22 miles from the equator, the city's high altitude ensures "eternal spring" temperatures throughout the year. Quito is an architectural jewel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Come and meet this exciting country that, in addition to its natural riches, offers you the warmth and hospitality of its people.
The focus of the Quito program is twofold: Spanish language and Andean cultures. The students will receive intensive instruction in Spanish language and a class in popular arts of the Andean region. Daily classes are held at the IES Abroad Quito Center, located at FLACSO in a new, modern building that includes classrooms, staff offices, a computer and library facilities.
Students live with Ecuadorian host families in carefully chosen private residences. You will have your own room and you will eat breakfast and the large midday meal with your family, providing ample opportunity for conversation and cultural exchange. The host families are experienced in introducing students from around the world to Quito and to Ecuadorian society. Vegetarian diets and other special needs are easily accommodated.
The program will organize excursions to museums, galleries and other places of interest within Quito and two or three weekend day trips to locations outside of the city. These trips will be coordinated with our study of popular arts and culture.
Students receive 6 credits for either SP 157 or SP 207, "Spanish in Mexico," depending on prior coursework and placement at the Institute. Both courses count toward the Spanish major or minor, and they are part of the Humanities Cluster: "Introduction to Spanish Studies."
