    Always a place of high ambition, this was one of the first institutions west of the Mississippi River to award doctoral degrees  the first was granted, in physics, in 1896. The University of Nebraska established the world's first undergraduate psychology laboratory. The discipline of ecology was born here, and the campuses reflect that tradition, being recognized as botanical gardens and arboreta. An early institutional interest in literature and the arts provided the foundations for today's Prairie Schooner literary magazine, for the University of Nebraska Press, and for the Sheldon Museum of Art, which houses one of the world's most significant collections of 20th century American art.

    Founded in 1869, the Lincoln campus of the University of Nebraska is the state's land-grant university and the only comprehensive university in Nebraska. Through its three primary missions of learning, discovery and engagement, the University of Nebraska is the state's intellectual center and has been recognized by the Legislature as the primary research and doctoral-degree granting institution in the state. Nebraska is one of a select group of research universities that holds membership in the Association of American uniiversities - a distinction granted in 1909. Nebraska was the first university west of the Mississippi to establish a graduate college (in 1896); today, NU is one of the top 50 American universities in the number of doctoral degrees granted annually. The University of Nebraska boasts 22 Rhodes Scholars and two Nobel laureates among its alumni. Nebraska's tradition of excellence is demonstrated not only in its classrooms and labs, but also on its fields of play. A member of the Big 12 Conference, the University of Nebraska Cornhuskers compete in 22 sports. No other school has produced more Academic All-Americans or Football Academic All-Americans than Nebraska.
