  • University Attributes

The University of Michigan-Dearborn is one of the three campuses of the University of Michigan, and is located on 196 acres of the former estate of automotive pioneer, Henry Ford.  It offers the association with a large multi-university and the advantages of moderate size and small classes.  Established in 1959 with a gift from the Ford Motor Company, the UM-D has developed into a comprehensive university, offering undergraduate and professional degrees in the liberal arts and sciences, engineering, management, education, and public administration.  One third of the campus, more than 70 acres, is maintained as one of the largest natural areas in metropolitan Detroit, serving as a research and teaching facility for students and school teachers on campus and throughout the region.  The Henry Ford Estate, a National Historic Landmark, is located on the campus, and continues to attract 150,000 visitors a year.  It includes the home of Henry Ford, extensive rose gardens designed by his wife, Clara, and many nature trails.

Enrollment in Fall 1998 was 8,219 highly selective students, representing a wide range of academic interests and diverse backgrounds.  New students are among the most academically qualified undergraduates in the state.  The mean high school GPA for the Fall 1997 entering class was 3.3; the mean ACT score was 22.7.  Ninety-nine percent of the students are Michigan residents, primarily from the greater Detroit metropolitan area.  Fifteen percent declare themselves minorities, including Asian and Pacific Islanders (5.2%), African Americans (6.9%), Hispanics (2.2%), and Native Americans (0.5%). Nearly sixty degree programs are offered at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  Graduate programs in education, engineering, and management are designed to meet the needs of practicing professionals, as well as the needs of businesses, institutions, agencies, and governments in the region.  There are 230 full-time instructional faculty members, 86% of whom hold doctorate degrees.  The University has an extensive co-op program, which offers structured work experiences to bring experiential education into the classroom curriculum.  The College of Engineering and Computer Science is recognized as one of the best in the country, and maintains strong ties with the business community, with more than 400 co-op placements available. The School of Management provides a strong program which utilizes state of the art classroom technology.  The College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters offers a liberal arts education and provides students with the opportunity to work in the real world and develop connections in their field of study.  The School of Education is a leader in the field of putting educational theory into practice.  Graduates achieve a high level of success on certification exams and are actively recruited for employment.

The University of Michigan-Dearborn is continuing to expand and develop facilities and access to technology on campus.  Plans have been approved to build a new classroom and office building for the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters.  Work is also underway to build the unique Environmental Interpretive Center, which will be a research center, an experiential environmental center, and a green oasis and wildlife preserve in one of the nations most heavily industrialized areas. With a faculty devoted to teaching, and student committed to achievement, UM-Dearborn has been shaped by its history of interaction with business, government and industry in southeastern Michigan, and is committed to responding to the needs of the region in the future.
