Description

The Summer Institute in Spain is designed for students with intermediate and advanced levels of Spanish proficiency. Courses are taught by University of Kansas faculty and staff and native instructors from Spain. The academic program begins with a nine-day tour by bus from Madrid to various cities in the central and northern regions of the peninsula. Following the tour, the group settles in Barcelona for five weeks of intensive coursework. During this five-week period, the group takes two weekend excursions, to the Dali Museum on the Costa Brava and to the Valle de Boi for a local festival.

Academic Program
Participants on the Barcelona program take courses at the intermediate or advanced Spanish levels depending on prior study in the language.

Intensive Intermediate Spanish Language
Students who have completed two or three semesters (or the equivalent) of college-level coursework in Spanish will enroll in the Intensive Intermediate Spanish Language option. All students will enroll in the following course:

SPAN 220 Intensive Intermediate Spanish. (6 credits)
An intensive review and continuation of grammar study, with particular attention to speaking, reading and writing practice. This course fulfills the general education language requirement. Students who have completed 3 semesters of prior study in Spanish receive credit for SPAN 216 and SPAN 270.

Advanced Spanish Studies
Students who have six semesters and Spanish 340 (or the equivalent) of college-level coursework in Spanish will enroll in the Advanced Spanish Studies option. All students will enroll in the following courses:

SPAN 446 Spanish History and Culture. (3 credits)
A study of the development of Spanish culture with particular emphasis on history, customs and traditions and literary trends and artistic tendencies that constitute Spain's specific contribution to Western Civilization.

SPAN 440 Hispanic Studies: The Moor in the Text. (3 credits)
A study of the portrayal of Moors in Spanish Medieval and Early Modern literary texts. The course will explore the cultural dynamics of religious and political otherness and its representation by Peninsular authors. The course fulfills a Peninsular literature requirement.

Highlights

Travel Period
The nine-day journey begins in Madrid and includes visits to Segovia, Valladolid, Burgos, Suances, Bilbao, and San Sebastian, finally ending in Barcelona. Students keep a journal in Spanish of their experiences as they visit sites such as el Alcázar de Segovia La Granja, the Altamira caves, Guggenheim Museum, Bilbao, cathedrals, and even a few beaches.

Barcelona
Barcelona, the capital of the Automonous Community of Catalonia, is one of the most prosperous and dynamic cities in Europe today. Students are encouraged to explore the cultural riches of this modern western European city after class: concerts, museums, theatre and outstanding architecture. Areas such as the Barri Gòtic and LEixample are filled with examples of history and architecture ranging from ancient to modern times.

Approximately USD4,650 (USD4,850 for non-KU students). The fee includes room, some meals (breakfast on the tour; breakfast and lunch in Barcelona), entry to cultural events during the travel period, orientation, emergency medical evacuation and repatriation services, and administrative costs.

The Intensive Intermediate Spanish Language option is open to undergraduate students from any accredited U.S. college or university who have completed at least two semesters (or the equivalent) of college-level Spanish. The Advanced Spanish Studies option is open to undergraduate students from any accredited U.S. college or university who have completed at least six semesters (or the equivalent) of college-level coursework in Spanish, including an introductory literature course. Minimum 2.5 GPA required.
