It is 210 miles northeast of Helsinki. Today Savonlinna has 29,000 residents and it is well known for its international opera festival and market-place. The wooden church in the nearby town of Kerimäki is the largest in the world. Pieksamaki is 206 miles north of Helsinki, in a region of high moraine hills that were settled in the 13th and 14th centuries. It is in the heart of the Central Savo region of Finland, and Lake Pieksamaki reaches into the center of town. The School of Forestry in Pieksamaki was founded in 1905, making it one of the oldest such institutions in Finland. It is located 2 1/2 miles outside of Pieksamaki between 3 beautiful lakes. The school has 200 students, and because of its small size, students and faculty are one big family.
