The Nagasaki University of Foreign Studies is located in the coastal city of Nagasaki on Kyushu Island in Japan. Because of its close proximity to China, Nagasaki was an important trading port. Trade with China began in the late 16th century, and flourished for the next 250 years. During this period, it was the only port open to foreign trade in Japan. In the mid 1800's, Nagasaki expanded its trade dominance in Japan by allowing British, American, and Russian traders to flourish there. Today, the original trading wharfs and international district have been restored to reflect its critical role to Japan's economic growth. This long history of cultural and economic interaction has allowed Nagasaki to become one of the most multi-ethnic cities in Japan, and one of the most welcoming cities to foreign visitors. Approximately 500,000 people live in Nagasaki. Next to the ocean, its steep hills and narrow winding streets may remind travelers of San Francisco. However, it has tropical summer weather and its winters are milder by comparison. Students can experience a number of traditional festivals such as the Nagasaki Kunchi Festival, considered to be one of the 3 greatest festivals in Japan, where neighborhoods compete with spectacular performances to capture Nagasaki's colorful and unique history. Students may also choose to spend an afternoon exploring the extensive Buddhist and Shinto temple district with its wonderful sculpted gardens and aesthetic shrines.
