This unique program will focus on selected topics in Latin American Literature, emphasizing fantasy and magical realism in the Latin American narrative of the 20th Century. The course will discuss how various genres question and shape the "truths" of our conceptions of reality and how these authors critique the dominant constructions of social class and gender. Students will interact with Costa Rican authors, poets, musicians, and story tellers in addition to reading and analyzing excerpts from multiple Latin American writers and watching movies.
During this program, students will be based at the UGA Costa Rica campus in San Luis de Monteverde. The program will also explore other regions of Costa Rica on field excursions. Activities included on the excursions are an integral part of course material and the overall study abroad experience. Students will begin the program based in San Luis at the UGA Costa Rica campus. The group will take multiple excursions around the Montevere region including zip-lines and canopy bridges, the Monteverde Cloudforest Reserve, the Brenes family organic farm, and others. The program will then spend time in San Jose, the capital city, at Arenal Volcano National Park, and at the Pacific coast town of Junquillal. The program will also include three nights of homestays with local families in San Luis.
