In 1964 the Queen granted a Royal Charter constituting and founding the University. It is one of the UK's leading academic institutions and has an international reputation for the quality of its research and teaching. The University has 19 departments spanning the Humanities, Law & Management, Social Sciences, and Science and Engineering. Special strengths include Sociology, Politics, Economics, and Art History. The University is on a green campus in historic Colchester, which is one hour from London by train. There are currently around 8,000 students at the University; 25% of these are within the Graduate School. The University is an international community with students from more than 140 countries. In recent assessments Essex has regularly ranked among the top ten UK universities for the quality of its research, with many of its departments rated as 'outstanding' by international standards.
