Location:
Classes will be held at the University of Dallas Rome Campus at Due Santi, Rome, Italy. Day trips and two overnight trips will be scheduled to sites related to the course material.

History 2302, Western Civilization II, taught by Dr. Susan Hansen
"Western Civilization II" continues the history of the West from the rise of the modern nation-state -- the early development of France and Britain in the context of competition for global empires, the rise of modern Italy, Germany, and Russia, the two World Wars that convulsed Europe, and the complex on-going negotiations of modern political sovereignty in wake of twentieth-century totalitarianism. The tensions between the Church and the modern nation-state on questions of human dignity and freedom are highlighted in readings from Kant, Burke, Marx, and Leo XIII. Rome, as the home of the Holy See and the birthplace of the European Union, provides a perfect setting for this study.

Theology 4V57, Faith, Reason, and Culture in the Roman Catholic Tradition, taught by Dr. Ron Rombs

"Faith, Reason, and Culture in the Roman Catholic Tradition" introduces and examines the ways in which the Catholic tradition has understood the relationship between faith and reason, and between faith and culture. A special focus is given to the city of Rome itself: the course emphasizes patristic perspectives in Rome (for example, Justin Martyr and Gregory the Great) and the thought of the two most recent popes, Blessed Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict XVI. The course will also include excursions to relevant sites, like the Christian catacombs and the Sistine Chapel, to compliment and give greater depth and dimension to readings and classroom discussion.
