  • Description

This course is designed specifically to allow students graduating with a computing-related foundation degree or HND to achieve a BSc (Hons) in Applied Computing in a single academic year. It equips you with the knowledge and practical skills required to become a professional IT and computing practitioner, particularly in Cumbria where these skills are in much demand. You will not only know how to do things with computers but also understand why certain techniques and practices should be adopted and followed. The combination of academic and applied skills will place you in a strong position on graduation, in terms of employability or continuance to a higher level of study.

Your course will most likely lead to employment in the IT and computing sector, but will also fully equip you to undertake further studies at masters level.

Graduates from this course have gone on to work for companies such as BNFL, Capita, Innovia Films and education establishments.

  • Highlights

To facilitate your learning you will enhance your research and evaluative skills through the Emerging Technologies and Dissertation modules. Your practical skills will be developed through your optional choices and the group, client-based project. You will, of course, have access to the universitys networked computer facilities, the extensive library and digital resources and the networking/server lab, with its high-quality workstations and industry-standard applications. Principally you will learn to evaluate the application of computing and IT solutions in a variety of situations. You will also learn to evaluate your own performance, understanding and application in these areas.

During your studies, your knowledge will be built up and assessed in academic modules through a variety of interesting and challenging assessments. Practical skills will be assessed through application and critical evaluation.

You will also have the opportunity to work on a client-led project to gain real-world work experience. Recent projects have seen students working on SAP projects with a SAP Consultancy Company. As we are situated in and around the Lake District National Park, we have ready access to the outdoors and use it for developing leadership, teams and problem solving.
