  • Description

Berkeley Summer Sessions offers exciting Travel Study programs that give you the chance to combine international travel with academic achievement. Courses are taught by regular rank UC Berkeley faculty, faculty of host institutions, and UC Berkeley graduate student instructors.

  • Highlights

Drawing upon various disciplines, the course offers a critical view of the African contribution and presence in Brazilian society. Furthermore, it focuses on the particular configuration of race relations in Bahia and the formation of Afro-Brazilian identity and its cultural expressions from a variety of historical and contemporary perspectives, with the aim of providing the tools for critical assessment of complex social and cultural relations. Course themes investigate concepts of cultural continuation and adaptation, and the emergence of Afro-Brazilian culture. Topics explored include: enslavement, the formation of group identity; spiritual and religious traditions; quilombos and early resistance movements; womens roles in society; contemporary political movements and traditional and contemporary creative expressions.

In Salvador, more than anywhere else in the country, the African influence in Brazilian culture is readily visible in the religious festivals and ceremonies of candomble that honor African deities, and the capoeira schools where a unique African form of ritualistic fighting is taught. Salvador is also the center for traditional and contemporary Afro-Brazilian art and culture. The program is enlivened by participation of local intellectual and social leaders who will expand on notions of interracial relations as well as those of class and gender in Brazilian society. This course will permit students to explore the particularities of Brazilian racial and ethnic formations and simultaneously reveal the specifics of being black in Bahia and Brazil. Moreover, students will discover how blacks and non-blacks build their relationships and experience daily life as they reflect upon the various dimensions of the larger society.
