Berkeley Summer Sessions offers exciting Travel Study programs that give you the chance to combine international travel with academic achievement. Courses are taught by regular rank UC Berkeley faculty, faculty of host institutions, and UC Berkeley graduate student instructors.
Home-stay living arrangements in the friendly beach town of Comillas, on the northern coast of Spain, offer students an ideal situation in which to practice their language skills through social interaction with a Spanish family. The focus of the program will be to develop communicative language proficiency through a variety of contextualized communication activities. Students will also be provided with a panoramic vision of the history and culture of Spain as a modern nation, integrated in the European Union, facing challenges which both resemble and differ from those facing the United States. Students will visit the cities of Santander (candidate for the Cultural Capital of Europe 2016) and Bilbao, home to the Guggenheim Museum, as well as Guernica, the Basque town that inspired Picasso's painting. Other excursions will include a visit to the small town of Puente Viesgo to see prehistoric cave paintings, a tour of the spectacular "Soplao" cave and biking a portion of the Camino de Santiago. Classes will be imparted in a newly renovated facility that was once the Pontificate University of Comillas, located within walking distance from the town in a spectacular park-like setting overlooking the Cantabrian Sea. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in a language exchange with students from the University of Cantabria.
