  • Highlights

Come to this small resort town on Spain's Mediterranean Costa Blanca and explore the role of culture, food, ritual and environment and their impact on architectural and urbanistic design. Once a quiet medieval fishing village, and still very much an authentic Spanish town, Guardamar de Segura appears to be a simple vacation town to most. But to the student of architecture and urbanism, it is a rich laboratory ripe with complexity and contradiction. This course will delve into the idea that universal principals of design are most evident and effective as poetic statements in the work of a designer only when different histories, cultures and points of view are experienced first-hand. Only then will the phenomena be revealed in local artifacts as well as in the contextual urban environment at large, thus offering the students of these issues opportunities to find common ground, interpret and utilize such findings in the development of a simultaneously universal and most personal point of view. As an architectural studio course, you will not only be seeking a theoretical response to the issues being studied, but a substantial effort shall be directed at arriving at physical, architectural solutions that speak to both the micro and macro problems of the site. Further, you will examine the notion that architectural context is not just about being a good neighbor in terms of aesthetic style, but of responding to larger issues affecting our planet today.
