Irish Theater: Origins and the Contemporary Scene

Berkeley Summer Sessions is an exciting Travel Study program that gives you the chance to combine international travel with academic achievement. Courses are taught by regular rank UC Berkeley faculty, faculty of host institutions, and UC Berkeley graduate student instructors. Join us next summer for the educational adventure of a lifetime!


1. Learn Irelands rich theatre, literary and historical culture by engaging youself in the study and practice of Irish theatre from historical and contemporary contexts.

2. Participate in visits to numerous historical and cultural sites including the Galway Arts Festival, Dublin Writers Museum and major sites associated with the Irish struggle for independence.

3. We welcome prominent theatre artists into our classroom throughout the program for talkbacks and group workshops including Druid Theatres Casting Director, Maureen Hughes, Barabbass artistic director, performer and clowning expert Raymond Keane, Irish Modern Dance Theatres John Scott, and the co-artistic directors of the internationally acclaimed Brokentalkers, Gary Keegan and Feidlim Cannon.

4. We host panel discussions with professionals working in technical design and theatre management and dance.
