  • Description

Home to Mt. Kilimanjaro, the Serengeti, and a great variety of animals and beautiful landscapes, Tanzania has many natural attractions to offer. There is also a great need for help as Tanzania is one of the poorest countries in the world. Volunteer in Tanzania and help by teaching English and Aids prevention in schools, or work in an orphanage or cancer institute. Further cultural immersion is offered through language lessons and an excursion to Zanzibar. There is so much to experience!

United Planet's Volunteer Abroad Quest program offers signature pre-departure and in-country training, personal volunteer support, meaningful volunteer opportunities, diverse cultural and learning activities, local excursions, a strong host family network, and much more.

United Planet Short-term Quest offers 16 destinations in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Middle East. Volunteers can chose a project from a wide range of projects, such as: orphanage care, teaching English, environmental work, healthcare and more. You will be 100% immersed in the local culture though cultural activities, excursions, and host family stays. You will also be supporting essential community development work.

  • Highlights

    Tanzania:

Tanzania is famous for its dramatic natural features, including: Mt. Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain peak in Africa and one of the world's Seven Summits, the Serengeti, and the turquoise waters of Zanzibar. These attractions draw skilled mountain climbers and wildlife enthusiasts alike as tourists to Tanzania.Despite this, Tanzania remains one of the poorest countries in the world. The country faces many economic and social issues, and a limited health care infrastructure results in large numbers of deaths from HIV/AIDS every year, in turn leading to many HIV/AIDS orphans.

    Specific projects in Tanzania:

    * Teaching: In Tanzania, schools are changing so that English is the language used in teaching. During this transition period significant assistance with English is needed in schools, so volunteers are needed to assist teachers with English instruction for grades 1-4.

    * Teaching Quest - Social Education: Volunteers will work with a local vocational school in a number of capacities. Volunteers can teach English and computer skills to the students during the day, and conduct HIV/AIDS education seminars in the evenings with the local community. No previous experience with HIV/AIDS education is required.

    * Orphanage: Help take care of children at an orphanage/shelter. Volunteers' roles include: taking care of the children and elders; preparing food; reading and telling stories, etc. The center includes over 100 acres of farmland, and they are currently focusing on building a new secondary school. Volunteer work is rotated so that volunteers are not doing the same task all the time. The work during the day is usually manual labor, including assisting with the farm.

*Education Center and Orphanage Quest: Volunteers work at an orphanage and education center where most of the children are orphans, while others are street children, children that come from brothels, or other socially disadvantaged children. Volunteers can help with training on topics such as Child Rights, Life and Facilitation Skills, Reproductive Health and HIV/AIDS. They can also assist in leisure programs such as singing, dancing, drama and sports.

    * Cancer Institute: The children's ward is a very busy place and extra hands are always needed. Volunteers with medical experience can assist the medical staff and patients directly, and those without medical experience may assist in many other important ways such as administrative tasks, interacting with the patients, and teaching.

*Disabled Youth Center Quest: Volunteers will work with mentally & physically disabled youth ranging from ages 6 to 31 years old. Tasks include teaching English, science, sports, playing and taking care of the children among other opportunities. Volunteers may choose to join in on activities at the centers farm located at a short distance from the center, attend primary school with the children, or remain at the facility to assist in daily activities. The centers aim is to create better awareness of mental disability in the community as well as improve the quality of life for mentally disabled young people

*Community Center Quest: Volunteers work at a community center in Dar es Salaam. The center was founded by a group of adults from the area that wanted to give back to their community. Volunteers can assist in a variety of activities, including teaching sports, arts, and English, taking care of children, and manual labor to improve the facilities. There are also opportunities for those with experience to work in management and development for the center. The motto of the center is "Everyone's got a talent," and as a volunteer, you are encouraged to share yours with the children there.
