Location
Sweden: Umea

  • Description

The aim of the programme is to provide studies in spatial planning and development and to give deeper insights in development work at the local, regional, national and international level.

After completing the programme you will have good knowledge about current theories on development and planning. Further, you will be familiar with advanced methods for analyses used by potential employers in the field of spatial planning and development. Among others, Geographic information systems (GIS), analyses of consequences, prognoses and simulation techniques are methods which you will master. The Magister/Master programme in spatial planning integrates a group of related social science subjects that are relevant for spatial planning. Some courses are given in cooperation with other departments in the form of joint classes with other Magister/Masters programmes. The advanced studies within the programme are in Social and Economic Geography with a main focus on spatial planning.

  • Highlights

If you choose the two-year master-programme your knowledge and methodological skills will be deeper, and at the same time the courses become more oriented towards international aspects of planning and development. The one-year master is a Swedish exam that requires an additional year of study after the bachelor degree. The two-year master exam equals the internationally recognized master exam.

Social/spatial planners are active in many places in society like municipality planning offices, county council offices, county administrative boards, government offices and consultancy firms. The training in the programme qualifies you to apply for posts in social/spatial planning where knowledge in advanced analytical and planning tools such as population prognoses, traffic flow prognoses and geographical information systems (GIS) as well as where the ability to assess consequences, are required. The programme also comprises international perspectives in order to prepare for work with planning issues abroad or with projects concerning cross-border cooperation. There is a great need for well-trained social/spatial planners with good knowledge in especially GIS on the labour market. As an older generation of planners now reaches the age of retirement numerous vacancies have to be filled over the coming years.
