The Arts of Spain: Architecture, Painting, Bullfighting, and Flamenco.
This program delves into the multiple legacies of Spanish art. The arrival of the Romans, Greeks, Arabs, and North Europeans shaped Spains highly diverse architecture. The traces of Arab art in Christian monuments are a clear testimony of Spains multicultural profile. The works of painters like El Greco, Velázquez, Picasso and Dali are shaped by their cultural heritage and their extensive travels. Some of the most emblematic manifestations of Spanish cultureflamenco dance and bullfightingowe their features to this plural past. We will experience Spanish art and culture by visiting the Burgos monasteries and Cathedral, traveling to Salamanca to see Spanish Renaissance, to Madrid to visit the Museos del Prado and Reina Sofia, and to Bilbao to explore the Guggenheim museum. We will also enjoy a flamenco show and a bullfight.

Frequently Asked Questions:
-Do I need to speak Spanish to participate in this program?
NO, you don't need to speak Spanish but I am sure that by the end of the program you will speak a little bit. You will have a "survival Spanish" class when you arrive in Burgos.
- I am an Art Studio major. Would I be able to do an art project during the program?
YES, Art Studio students will be able to do a combination of a "research and painting" project for the Spa 198 course.
- Do we have some free time to travel during the program?
YES, you will have some free weekends and you will get advise about the best options for traveling.
- How easy is to visit other European countries?
VERY EASY. Burgos is only 2:45 minutes away from Madrid-Barajas airport. From Madrid it takes only two hours to fly to Paris, London, Rome, Amsterdam, Berlin, Zurich.... There is also a small airport in Burgos with flights to Paris, Barcelona, the Canary Islands, and the Balearic Islands.
- How is the weather in Burgos?
VERY PLEASANT for the summer. You don't have the high temperatures of the rest of Spain because of the relatively high altitude of Burgos. It could be cold at night. The weather is somehow similar to Lake Tahoe in the summer.

UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offer students short but intense academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of cultural activities. The courses are structured in such a way that students gain knowledge not only in the classroom, but also from experiential learning that takes advantage of the program site. All of our programs are built around UC Davis courses and are led by UC Davis faculty. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Our class sizes are limited, generally enrolling from 18-30 students, thus allowing us to create intimate learning communities overseas. Programs are open to all students outside the UC system, alumni and professionals.
