Term

Dates
6/16/2012 - 7/14/2012
The primary goal of this program is to get students to enjoy performances of Shakespeare's plays. During our four-week stay in London, we will read and see at least five of those plays. We will also spend a day in Stratford-upon-Avon, touring the Shakespeare houses. We will watch and discuss video versions of some of the plays we see. We will take a walking tour of Shakespeare-related sites in Londons South Bank, tour the Globe Theatre, and talk with one or more Shakespearean actors/directors. The class meetings and the plays will take place Monday through Thursday, so weekends will be free to explore London and to travel elsewhere in the British Isles or on the continent.
COURSES:
* English 118 (4 units): Shakespeare
Selected major works by Shakespeare. Recommended for non-majors. May be applied toward the English major when completed in London.
GE credit: Arts and Humanities, Writing
* English 198 (4 units): Directed Group Study
Studying plays on site is a unique experience. We will consider dramatic movements within the century, trying to see the plays in their historical context. Working in small groups, students will actively explore theatres, museums and neighborhoods important to the eras and playwrights studied. There will be a day trip to Shakespeare's birthplace, Stratford, where we will also see a Royal Company production. Guest lecturers will be invited to discuss Shakespeare and theatre.
* Activity Highlights:
Welcome activity hosted by FIE - featuring a reception and walking tour of the neighborhood
- Bus tour of London
- Day trip to Stratford-upon-Avon (tour Shakespeare houses, and observe (hopefully) a falconry demonstration at the farm where Mary Arden (Shakespeares mother) grew up)
- Guest lecturers from experts on Shakespeare and theatre
- Plays at the Old Vic include Much Ado About Nothing and Hamlet
Additional plays will be listed as tickets become available.

4-5 weeks
UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offer students short but intense academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of cultural activities. The courses are structured in such a way that students gain knowledge not only in the classroom, but also from experiential learning that takes advantage of the program site. All of our programs are built around UC Davis courses and are led by UC Davis faculty. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Our class sizes are limited, generally enrolling from 18-30 students, thus allowing us to create intimate learning communities overseas. Programs are open to all students outside the UC system, alumni and professionals.
