Taiwan has produced some of the greatest Chinese literature and film. It's also known for its unique blend of tradition and modernity - a thriving IT industry existing side by side with the ancient tea ceremony, the second tallest skyscraper in the world existing side by side with Buddhist temples and Daoist shrines. We'll study Taiwan film and literature at National Taiwan University in Taipei and meet some of the country's leading poets, novelists, directors, and scholars. We'll take field trips to internationally renowned sites, such as the National Palace Museum, Longshan Temple, and night markets. Students will gain a rich understanding of Taiwan that can only come from immersion in the culture. Please contact us or visit the UC Davis Summer Abroad website for more information.
- Experience the rich culture that blends tradition and modernity, localism and cosmopolitanism
- Study at National Taiwan University, the premier university in Taiwan
- Great food, great sights, great people!
From the instructor:
Taiwan is my birthplace, and literature - especially poetry - is my passion. I have taught the course on Taiwan literature at Davis many times, and it is a very popular course among students. This will be the first time the course is offered in Taiwan. There is nothing better than studying literature in its native environment; you see it come alive before your eyes in the people, culture, and society around you. You also have the rare opportunity to meet some of the leading writers, poets, and film directors in person, which is impossible when the course is taught in California. I guarantee an exciting, invaluable experience.

UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offer students short but intense academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of cultural activities. The courses are structured in such a way that students gain knowledge not only in the classroom, but also from experiential learning that takes advantage of the program site. All of our programs are built around UC Davis courses and are led by UC Davis faculty. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Our class sizes are limited, generally enrolling from 18-30 students, thus allowing us to create intimate learning communities overseas. Programs are open to all students outside the UC system, alumni and professionals.
