The iconic mini cooper and the graphic character for the London underground are excellent representations of modern British design expression. Design plays a significant role in shaping and communicating the world around us and has done so for centuries. For the first two weeks, this program will be based in York, a northern English city so steeped in history it's the ultimate museum without walls and record of over a millennium of trend setting architecture and design. While in York, you'll also be taking day field trips to Liverpool and Newcastle.
For the last two weeks of the program, we'll be moving onto overnight stays in Edinburgh and London to go behind the scenes at some of Britains major museums. Creative research projects will tackle the fluid boundaries between public art and design, and the emergence of the experience economy, where British culture, commerce and entertainment are packaged for public consumption across a range of narrative display venues and products.
"Explore your creativity in a U.K. design studio. Experience over 1,000 years of trend setting British architecture and design. York is a city so steeped in history its the ultimate museum without walls." --Tim McNeil, Instructor.
Locations and Excursions:
The program will be based for the first two and a half weeks in the northern English city of York. We will work at a university's design center, and collaborate closely with York Museums Trust. York is easy to navigate and has some of the finest museums in Britain including the National Railway Museum, and superb examples of Roman, Norman, Medieval and Georgian architecture and design. From York we will take day trips to Leeds, famous for its Victorian architecture, and the former industrial center of Newcastle with its new contemporary buildings. There will also be opportunities to visit other local design classics such as Castle Howard, or the vibrant cities of Liverpool and Manchester on the weekends.
During the third week we will travel to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, one of the most architecturally unique and picturesque cities in the world. We will visit the National Museum of Scotland and the design firm Studio MB, and take a day trip to Glasgow, home of the Glasgow School of Art and the designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
Our last destination will be London, capitol of British style. Here we will spend five days, stay in a converted prison, experience some of the best contemporary British design and architecture, and visit behind-the-scenes of world class museums including the British Museum, the V&A, the Design Museum, and the Tate Modern.

4-5 weeks
UC Davis Summer Abroad programs offer students short but intense academic courses that are complemented with a wealth of cultural activities. The courses are structured in such a way that students gain knowledge not only in the classroom, but also from experiential learning that takes advantage of the program site. All of our programs are built around UC Davis courses and are led by UC Davis faculty. Many provide opportunities for students to visit non-English speaking countries while doing their coursework in English. Our class sizes are limited, generally enrolling from 18-30 students, thus allowing us to create intimate learning communities overseas. Programs are open to all students outside the UC system, alumni and professionals.
